7 Signs Your Deck Needs Attention
- Soft or spongy boards: often a sign of rot
- Wobbly railings or handrails: a safety concern, especially on elevated decks
- Loose or moving stairs
- Rust on nails, screws, hangers or other metal connectors
- Rot or cracks in posts, beams or joists
- The deck moves or sways when people walk on it
- Splintering, cupping or wide cracks across the boards
When a Repair Is Enough
If the problems are limited to a few boards, a section of railing or a set of stairs, and the framing underneath is solid, a targeted repair can restore the deck.
When Resurfacing Makes Sense
If the surface is worn but the posts, beams and joists are in good condition, you can replace the decking, stairs and railings on the existing frame. It's also a good time to upgrade to low-maintenance composite, as long as the frame is suitable for it.
When It's Time to Replace
If the structure itself shows rot, damage or movement, or the deck has reached the end of its life, a full replacement is usually the safer and more cost-effective choice. A new deck also lets you change the layout, size and stairs to fit how you use your backyard today.
