1. Size and Shape
Larger decks need more framing, more decking and more labor. Simple rectangles are the most efficient to build; multiple levels, angles and curves add time and material.
2. Height and Your Lot
Many North Atlanta backyards slope away from the house. A deck that sits several feet off the ground needs taller posts, more bracing, longer stairs and more railing than a deck close to grade. Access to the backyard and soil conditions also play a role.
3. Decking Material
The decking material is one of the biggest choices you'll make:
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Pressure-treated wood | Lowest upfront cost; needs regular cleaning, staining or sealing |
| Composite (Trex, TimberTech) | Higher upfront cost; low maintenance, no splinters, consistent color |
| Hidden fasteners & picture-frame borders | Add cost, but give a cleaner, more custom finish |
4. Stairs, Railings and Details
Stairs, guardrails, handrails and post wraps add up, especially on elevated decks. Railing style matters too: wood railings generally cost less than composite or metal railing systems. Built-in benches, lighting and a pergola or screened porch are additional options.
5. New Deck or Replacement?
Replacing an old deck includes removing and disposing of the existing structure. On the other hand, if the frame is still sound, resurfacing with new boards and railings can cost less than a full rebuild. Our repair or replace guide explains how to tell.
